Abstract:

This study investigated the social and economic effects of the menace of Fulani herdsmen crises in Nigeria. The study specifically examined the causes of Fulani herdsmen and farmers clashes in Nigeria, and the social and economic effects of the menace of Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria. The sample of the study consisted of 250 farmers and 150 respondents from Fulani tribe selected from affected Local Government areas in Southwest, Nigeria via purposive sampling technique. A questionnaire titled Economic and Social Effects of Herdsmen Clashes Questionnaire (ESEHCQ) was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics of t-test were used to analyze the data generated from respondents. The findings revealed that the major cause of the conflict was destruction of crops. The social effect of the menace of Fulani herdsmen are loss of human life, sexual harassment of human life, acquiring of weapons/arms, reduction in quality of social relationship, reduction of social support and high cases of rape while the economic effect of the menace of Fulani herdsmen are reduction in output and income of farmers/nomads, loss of produce in storage, displacement of farmers, scarcity of agricultural products, loss of house and properties and infrastructural damages. The findings also revealed that farmers and Fulani perception of the causes of Fulani herdsmen and farmers clashes in Nigeria are not different while farmers and Fulani perception of the social effects and economic effects of Fulani herdsmen and farmers clashes in Nigeria are different. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that representatives of the host communities and Fulani herdsmen should be conveyed under a public forum and involved in the decision making and permitted to take part actively in the planning procedure of restoring peace to most of the affected communities.

Abstract:

This study investigated the effect of cartoon animation teaching strategy on the academic performance of students in Social Studies in secondary schools in Ondo State. In addition, the study examined the influence of gender on the effectiveness of the teaching method.  The study was a quasi – experimental research which adopted the pre-test post-test research design. The population for the study comprised Junior Secondary School class two students in Ondo State out of which 80 students were selected using multistage random sampling technique. The instrument used for the study was the Social Studies Achievement Test (SSAT) designed by the researcher. The face and content validity of the instrument were ensured by the experts in Social Studies Education and Tests and Measurement Departments. The data obtained through the instrument were analyzed using inferential statistics of t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The finding of the study revealed that there were significant difference between the mean pre-test and post-test scores of students taught Social Studies using cartoon animation and lecture method. Highest scores were recorded when cartoon animation was used in instructional delivery while lecture method has the least mean score in the post – test. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended, among others, that Social Studies teachers should deliver their lessons to students using cartoon animation method of teaching.

Abstract:

This study investigated sociocultural factors as a determinant of women’s attitude towards participation in trade unionism in Ondo State. The study adopted a descriptive research design of survey type with selection of 500 respondents for five selected tertiary institutions in the state through multi-stage sampling techniques. Socio – Cultural Variables and Women Participation in Trade Unionism Questionnaire (SCVWPTUQ) was used to elicit necessary data from women. The data were subjected to Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis at α = 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed a significant relationship between socio-cultural variables (age, level of education and religion affiliation) and women’s participation in trade unionism. Age of women was found to have the highest significant correlation (r = 0.502; p≤ 0.05) with women participation in trade unionism. Moreover, the socio-cultural variables were to have significant (R2= 0.664, p≤ 0.05 affected the participation of women in unionism. It was recommended that the older women should encourage the younger ones to participate more in trade unionism in Ondo State. Also, there is need for reformation of religious institution of the state to discourage gender biasness in trade unionism. Women education is also a sine qua non (necessity) in order to build women courage and confidence to compete with their men counterparts in unionism. Abstract:

This study investigated the influence of economic recession on the enrolment of students in private secondary schools in Ondo State Nigeria. The study also examined the rate and extent of withdrawal of students from private secondary schools in the last five years in the state. The population consisted of all private Secondary School in Ondo State. The sample is made up of 90 principals and 90 proprietors of private secondary schools. This was drawn from the 18 Local Government Area of the state through random sampling techniques. Five principals and five proprietors were selected randomly from each of the Local Government Areas of the state making a total of 180 participants as sample for the study. Two research questions were raised for the study. A questionnaire titled Economic Recession and Enrollment Questionnaire (EREQ) was used to collect data. The data collected were subjected to descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, mean, standard deviation, percentage and chart statistics. The findings revealed that there was steady decrease in enrolment rate in private secondary school and that economic recession in the state contributed to the withdrawal of students and the extent of students’ withdrawal was high. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that school proprietors should fashioned out a way to allow parents pay school fees in many as possible instalments within a time frame. Parents need to also create alternative sources of income to cope with the current recession in the state.
